"BE POLITE WITH THE ATMOSPHERE"

The MOOC "BE POLITE WITH THE ATMOSPHERE"

A tool at the service of students

WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT ?

Free online training on the topic of ATMOSPHERE and CLIMATE.

FOR WHO ?

For classes from CE2, CM1, CM2 and above.

HOW IT WORKS ?

A series of video lessons are offered to children on the MOOC platform. After each video a questionnaire allows them to check what they have retained so far, including what they have just discovered. At the end of the course, as long as answers are 80% correct, the class obtains its certificate of achievement.

WHAT'S NEW IN THIS PROJECT?

This is the first free, online training course (MOOC) for children.

On the course platform, “CHILDREN TALK TO CHILDREN”. There are no adults on the screen. The students who helped deliver the MOOC were filmed in the studio just like popular-science youtubers.

They are the ones who speak, facing the camera.

This new training tool dedicated to the atmosphere and climate is therefore offered to students by their peers.

WHAT IS THE CONTENT?

During the first three chapters of the course, students are invited to discover how the atmosphere works to better understand the climate change issue. In the first chapter, key concepts from science programs are discussed: what is air, the water cycle, photosynthesis? Then in chapters 2 and 3: what is the difference between weather and climate, what is the greenhouse effect, what is the impact of human activities on the functioning of the atmosphere ? It then discusses the climates of ancient times, up to the IPCCs and the COP conferences. In the fourth and final chapter, “From Problems to Solutions”, students find out where greenhouse gas emissions come from and how they are measured. Finally, they are led to take up online challenges by inventing their own low-carbon lifestyle for when they turn 20, in 2030, then as far as 2050.

Objective
Educating students about atmosphere and climate
Target age group
For classes from CE2, CM1, CM2 and above.
About you
A team of scientific mentors from the Pierre Simon Laplace Institute (IPSL) and Philippe Frasseto, the teacher in a CE2 class at the François AMADEI school in Bastia (Academy of Corsica) developed the course content. The course platform and the videos were produced with the support of a neighborhood association (OPRA) and a young videographer. The design of the videos was enriched by an illustrator and a graphic designer. An author of science books for young people added substance to the content. The ‘Savanturiers de la Recherche and the Center for Interdisciplinary Research’ (CRI) also helped in the creation of the course. Finally, Jean JOUZEL, climatologist and Nobel Peace Prize winner, is the sponsor of this project.
